Scouts Victoria
CDS FAQs
1. What are the details of the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS)?
The CDS involves collecting eligible beverage containers for a refund. A 10 cent refund is given for
each returned container. You can find more information at
https://cdsvic.org.au/
2. How can Scout Groups participate in the CDS?
Scout Groups can participate by setting up collection points at their Hall, collecting eligible
containers, and then returning them to your most convenient return point.
3. Are there facilities for bulk receivals of containers?
Some collection points or depots might have facilities for bulk receivals. Get in contact with your local
depots and they will be able to assist you. You can find a map of your local depots
here.
4. Can cans be crushed to save space? And do the barcodes need to be readable?
Cans should not be crushed if possible as some depots will need to be able to read barcodes to
process the refund. There are some depots with machines that can still count crushed cans; so
always check with your local depot before deciding to do this. Reverse Vending Machines cannot
take crushed cans. The Scouts Victoria Depots in Mount Waverley and Glen Waverley can take crushed containers.
5. How do we register the Scout Group for the scheme?
You can sign up to receive a Scout Hall Donation Point pack
here so that you can collect eligible containers at your local hall.
All Scout Groups and Formations with registered bank details in our extranet have been registered as Donation Partners for the CDS Scheme.
6. Where are the locations of the depots, reverse vending machines (RVMs) and Over the Counter Partners (OTCs)?
7. Who is responsible for collecting the bins? Is there a charge for this collection?
The process will vary, but typically the Group would be responsible to return containers to a
depot to collect the refund. Once your local depots are set up we recommend you speak with
them on an individual basis as different depots will approach this differently.
8. What should a Group do with unsuitable bottles and cans?
Unsuitable containers should be recycled or disposed of through regular waste management
processes.
9. Can campsites participate in the CDS?
Yes
10. How will Scouts Victoria utilise the money collected from the scheme by being the registered Donation Partner?
All funds received through the
scheme will be allocated back to projects that support youth.
11. Are additional bins for donation points available for order?
Yes, once you have set up as a Scout Hall Donation point if you need additional bins in the future you will be able to request more.
12. Can Scout Groups become Over The Counter (OTC) collection points?
Any group wanting to do this; or being approached to do this should get in contact with us at
cds@scoutsvictoria.com.au so we can explore the possibility further for you.
13. How will remote regions receive collection bins or signage materials?
Logistics will be organised once we know which halls would like to participate as Scout Hall Donation Points.
